Larisa's Mini Scholars Preschool
What does STEM stand for?
S = Science
T = Technology
E = Engineering
M = Mathematics
Science begins with questions and fosters investigation. Investigation leads to a hypothesis requiring exploration to find evidence to answer those questions. Why and how drive us to experiment and observe to develop and understanding of our world. At Larisa's Mini Scholars Preschool, I believe curiosity is the catalyst that moves children to ask and explore.
Technology, by definition, is applied science, the application of knowledge to practical purposes. Technology focuses on making things happen. In their natural state of play, children employ technological concepts in their inventions, constructions, and as they manipulate everyday materials. They imagine, design, test and redesign throughout the day.
Engineering is the art and science of problem solving. Engineers design and invent solutions for natural and man-made problems, as does the child at play in the sandbox, in block area, and at the manipulative table. I believe that in order to be innovative, children need hands-on experience with materials that intrigue, challenge and offer multiple solutions. Innovation, critical thinking and the creative process are at the core of engineering and at the heart of every preschooler's curiosity about the world around them.
Mathematics is broadly defined as the study of quantity, structure, space and change. Both abstract and logical thinking are cultivated by experiences in mathematics. I believe math is best when it is contextual for young children. Environments rich with opportunities to count, compare, arrange, sort and pattern are vital to building strong foundations for mathematics.
